Mazda CX-5 vs. Subaru Forester

Midsize crossover SUVs are among the most popular vehicles on the road today, offering a blend of utility, comfort, and convenience that's attractive to many drivers near South Bend, Indiana. The new Mazda CX-5 has become particularly popular with its tasteful styling and enjoyable driving dynamics. But it's not the only model in the segment that shoppers are considering.

Many in the area are also thinking about one of the CX-5's main competitors -- the Subaru Forester. To get to know how the CX-5 stacks up against the competition, check out our comparison below.

li>In terms of power, the CX-5 has a strong advantage over the Forester. Its base SKYACTIV-G makes 187 horsepower, edging out the Forester's standard 182-horsepower engine. But it's the available turbocharged engine makes 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque -- substantially more than is available in the Forester.
  • The CX-5 and Forester have different kinds of transmissions that yield distinct driving experiences. The Forester uses a standard Continuously Variable Transmission. Meanwhile, the CX-5 uses a conventional six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift and sport mode. The automatic transmission is likely to give the kind of experience behind the wheel that drivers in the area are used to.
  • Many drivers know the Subaru Forester for its signature symmetrical all-wheel drive system -- but it's not the only midsize SUV that offers all-wheel drive. In fact, the Mazda CX-5 offers its own available all-wheel drive system. I-ACTIV AWD® gives the CX-5 extra grip and stability in a variety of conditions. As grip needs change, power can be diverted to different wheels to compensate.
  • If you plan on using your SUV for light towing duty, you'll want to get the Mazda. The Forester is limited to a towing capacity of just 1,500 pounds. The Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, can handle up to 2,000 pounds of towing.

  • The new CX-5 uses a dynamic design language that sets it apart from the Subaru Forester. The form and shape of the CX-5 were carved from clay by human hands with emphasis on a sense of motion and fluidity. Mazda calls it the "Kodo" design language.
  • There are design differences inside the cabin as well. The Forester sticks to the Subaru brand, offering a cabin space that aims for a rugged and adventurous look. The CX-5 goes in another direction, emphasizing tasteful, premium style and craftsmanship. This shines through in the SUV's multitude of soft-touch premium materials and elegant shapes throughout.
  • The new CX-5 offers nicer standard wheels than the Forester. While the CX-5 gets standard 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, the Forester is relegated to standard 17-inch steel wheels.

  • The CX-5 again challenges the Forester on the safety front. The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology suite of the Forester is certainly impressive -- but you'll want to check out the i-Activsense safety suite of the CX-5 as well. This standard package includes features like Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Lane Departure Warning System.
  • The new CX-5 has a clever new feature that can make driving more convenient. The Active Drive Display projects graphics onto the windshield so you can keep your attention on the road. It's able to display everything from navigation to safety warnings. The Forester has no similar feature.
  • You can get the new Mazda CX-5 with available cabin ambient lighting. You can adjust this lighting to set a specific mood. There is no ambient lighting option for the Subaru Forester.
