South Bend Drivers, Compare the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback

Basney Mazda has Compared the Two Crossovers for South Bend Drivers

While both the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback are popular crossover models in the South Bend area, there are quite a few differences between the two models outside of just the nameplate. The CX-5 boasts a more powerful engine, better fuel economy, and more available features to make it an overall better buy for South Bend drivers.

Performance

Both on paper and in the real world the Mazda CX-5 outperforms the Subaru Outback in every major category.

  • Horsepower:

The 2.5-liter engine in the CX-5 produces 187 horsepower to the Outback’s 175 hp, and torque is more substantial on the Mazda CX-5 as well, at 186 pound-feet to just 174 pound-feet on the Subaru model.

This results in a zero to 60 mph time of 8.6 seconds for the CX-5 up against the 10.5 seconds clocked by the Outback in Consumer Reports testing.

  • Towing:

The Mazda CX-5 boasts a maximum towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. That’s enough for an average boat or a small camper. In contrast, the Outback is capable of just 2,700 pounds of towing capacity.

  • Fuel Economy:

While EPA testing found both the Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Outback to offer identical highway fuel economy at 27 mpg, but in the city the CX-5 pulled ahead at 22 mpg versus just 20 mpg in the Outback.

Available Features

The CX-5 offers several features that the Outback doesn’t and each of them are aimed at making your life easier inside your CX-5.

  • Heads up display
  • One-touch front and rear windows
  • Automatic variable wipers
  • Optional ventilated seats
  • Power folding rear seats
